Minoxidil for hair loss

Minoxidil is one of the best-known treatments for pattern hair loss. Topical minoxidil is applied to the scalp and is available without prescription in the Netherlands.

It is mainly used for androgenetic alopecia. It is not the correct treatment for every type of hair loss, so establishing the likely pattern first matters.

Hair changes slowly. Benefit is assessed over months of consistent use. Temporary increased shedding can occur early in treatment as the hair cycle changes.

If it works, ongoing use is generally needed to maintain the effect.

Topical minoxidil can cause dryness, irritation, itching or burning of the scalp. Accidental spread can lead to unwanted hair growth elsewhere.

Minoxidil also exists as a tablet originally used for high blood pressure. Low-dose oral minoxidil is also used off-label for hair loss in some settings. This is not the same as over-the-counter topical treatment and requires individual medical assessment because systemic adverse effects are possible.
