Rosacea: facial redness has different causes

Rosacea is a chronic condition that often affects the central face. Features can include persistent redness, flushing, visible blood vessels and inflammatory bumps.

Not every red face is rosacea. Eczema, acne, perioral dermatitis and product irritation can resemble it.

Treatment depends on the dominant features. A gentle routine and regular sun protection are often useful foundations. Targeted topical or oral medication may be considered when appropriate.

Triggers differ between individuals. Identifying your own reproducible triggers is usually more useful than following an exhaustive universal avoidance list.

Eye dryness, burning or eyelid inflammation can occur with rosacea. Eye pain, light sensitivity or changes in vision require timely medical assessment.
